Help Your Child To Become A Success - Top 3 Goal Setting Tools For Parents
Setting and achieving goals with your kids can be a hugely beneficial process as it also helps you to develop their self confidence, as they learn new skills and become more motivated to try new things. It may not be simple to get a child to consider the concept of how to ‘achieve more in your life’, but it is certainly time well spent in consideration of your childs self esteem as a whole.
A good starting point might be to take an everyday task, such as leaving the house for school. Ask 'how do you feel when we have to leave the house in a rush' and take it from there... it could be that your child also hates feeling rushed and would prefer to leave the house feeling more relaxed. In which case, seize the opportunity to identify the pressure points in the lead up to leaving the house and work from there. Simple examples of 'pressure points' that could become goals might be :-
- making sure teeth are brushed straight after breakfast
- setting clothes out the night before, so that they are ready to put straight on
- ensuring coats and shoes are routinely kept in one place
Try it - it could just make for an 'easy win' to kick start the whole goal setting process.
1. Visualise Success
Exploring what success means to your child, and visualising the impact it will have on their life will help you both with achieving your goals en route and is an important kids self improvement tool. Although this may sound simple, it is in fact an incredibly powerful starting point, since it is what you believe you can do, that you will do. As they say ‘dream it, believe it, achieve it’!
So ask your child to ‘imagine yourself doing the thing you really want to do, think of the smells and sights and sounds that you would experience. How do you feel?’ and take it from there! Remember, what you think about is what you become, so the more you encourage your child to think about their goals the more they happen.
2. Have a Success Coach
Advise your child that if they are going to succeed in their mission to be a success story that they will need a success coach to help them. They should ask somebody who you both respect and trust if they will help them to achieve their goals. Make it your mission to identify someone who is knowledgeable about achieving similar goals. You might use the example, that if you want to be a great athlete, find the best runner you know and ask them how they got to be so fast! whoever you choose, you don’t have to copy them, but you will learn from them. Find out what they did, and how they think, and see if that’s a fit for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Learning about their experience will save you a great deal of time.
3. Take Consistent Action
Ask your child ‘Do you REALLY want that success enough to achieve your goals? Then you must take action. Not just every so often, or when you feel like it, but as often as you can’.
If you can encourage your child to work each day on their goals, you will soon find that they get closer to them as time goes by. The journey may seem long, but a little travel each day will bring about great progress! Inch by inch it’s a cinch, yard by hard it’s hard!
A Bonus Tip – Challenge Yourself and Keep Focused
A good piece of advice to help increase your child's self confidence is ‘If you always do what you’ve always done you’ll always get what you’ve always got’!
For your child to successfully achieve what they want, advise them ‘you need to be open to reviewing your goals’. Consider if you are still headed in the right direction, or if there are changes we could make that will be beneficial?
