How To Take Care Of Pet Lizards
Pet lizards are popular to various pet owner groups because they are relatively easy to keep. While they do have their own pet care needs, they are not as sensitive as cats, dogs, and even birds. There are many types of pet lizards all over the world. Some hobbyists and pet owners own one or more types of pet lizards. If you are going to own a pet lizard for the first time, the decision make be quite daunting. However, you can limit your choice depending on some factors.
A veterinarian from Wesley Chapel says that one of the most important factors to consider when choosing pet lizards is their size. Some pet lizards grow to several inches long, while others grow to about several feet and meters. The veterinarian stresses that size is of utmost importance because it is the prime determinant of the type and size of housing that you will use. Like what most veterinary clinic does, you should assume the largest size documented for the particular species of pet lizard that you will choose.
Another pet care essential that you need to know is that pet lizards naturally shed their skins. If your pet shed its skin in patches, do not panic and rush to the nearest veterinary clinic. This is completely normal and should not be a cause for any alarm. The only problem that arises when lizards are shedding off their skin is when a part of the skin does not come off. If this happens around toes, tail, and dorsal spines, loss of appendages may ensue. This is because skins that do not come off around these areas dry off which results to the appendage loss.

It is hard to tell whether skin shedding progresses normally for this type of pets. A warm soak is recommended by a veterinarian to help the shedding process. For some pet lizards, humidity hide is good. For others, however, regular misting is enough.
Another thing you need to know before owning a pet lizard is your ability to handle such kind of pet. Like other types of pets, there are pet lizards that are friendlier than other lizard species. For instance, bearded dragons like to be petted and handled by humans. Chameleons, on the other hand, generally do not like being touched. So pet owners are advised to just observe them from a distance. Human handling brings stress to chameleons and the likes.
In general, pet lizards do not like being handled and touched. So if you are looking for a pet like that, veterinarians suggest that you look for other pets instead. Pet lizards like their independence and their innate ability to roam around freely.
