Pass Through

Frequently Asked Questions...

Does the Euler line pass through the incenter of a triangle?

Or does it just pass through the Orthocenter, Circumcenter, and Centroid?
Please provide an explanation.

Answer:

The incenter of a triangle lies on its Euler line if and only if the triangle is isosceles.

Proving this is tricky to do without drawing diagrams, but it's fairly easy to see why the Euler line doesn't always pass through the incenter of a triangle by considering the case of a right triangle.

In any right triangle, the orthocenter is at the right angle and the circumcenter is at the midpoint of the hypotenuse. This makes it especially easy to find the Euler line.

The incenter of a right triangle lies on the bisector of the right angle. Since the incenter cannot be at the right angle vertex itself (otherwise the triangle is degenerate), it can only be colinear with the other two centres if the triangle is isosceles.

Of course this is not a proof of the general case. We leave that as an exercise.
