Frequently Asked Questions...
What do you think of a wrist harness for toddlers?
I just answered a question about it i would like to know what people thought about them? Does these make mothers out as lazy mothers who cant control their children? Or is it safety all concern that matters?
sorry the toddler is almost 3, and a very stubborn child
I must admit i use a wrist harness on my nearly 3 yr only recently tho, as i am 32 weeks pregnant and i CANNOT run after him his safety is my own concern, i dont care if it makes me look lazy as soon as this baby is born of comes the harness and he will hold my hand again. The bottom line is the childs safety.
Answer:
I think a harness is a great idea for children who run away from their mothers.
My young son would just bolt at random times when my husband and I were shopping. He loved the attention it got him. To him, it was a really fun game. All of the scolding and time outs had no impact. He ran away from me at Home Depot (I was 8 months pregnant and was holding his hand when he pulled away from me) and ran out of the plant area right toward the street. My husband grabbed the back of his shirt RIGHT as a car rushed past. It makes my skin crawl to think about it now. He would have been killed had my husband not reached him in time.
For some children, a harness may save their lives. I really don't care what other people think about the appearance of a harness. I think that as a parent, it's my responsibility to keep my child safe. If my child is impulsive and immature, then maybe it's in his best interest to be gently restrained from running into traffic.
Nobody knows their own child the way his/her mother does. If you genuinely feel that your child's safety is in jeopardy, then do what you need to do to protect him.
I think that parents who think a harness is for a dog, or feel that the parent using the harness is lazy--- haven't had to deal with a difficult to control child. They don't mean to be judgmental, they just have no frame of reference.
Last time I saw a parent with a harness on her child, I thought, "smart lady."
